Project summary |
Since the Russian invasion of the Crimean peninsula in 2014 the geopolitical tensions have increased, and even more so since February 2022. During the on-going war between Russia and Ukraine, threats of the use of nuclear weapons have been expressed. Also, nuclear power plants in the area have been weaponized. If a radiological emergency would occur with dispersion of radionuclides, land areas and thus crops and animals meant for consumption might be contaminated with radionuclides from the fallout. In order to quickly assess the contamination of crops and animals, modelling tools can be used to estimate the transfer of radionuclides from the nuclear fallout to crops and animals. To increase the awareness of the work that has been done up until now and to identify further improvements, a two-day workshop will be held with focus on discussions about modelling of radionuclide transfer from a nuclear weapon explosion fallout to man via food intake. The participants of the seminar will share knowledge and describe assessment models used in their work. Possible future joint research projects will also be discussed. Key topics that will be discussed during the seminar: - source terms from nuclear weapon explosions; - radioecological modelling for assessment of contamination to man via food; - assessment tools used by the Nordic countries; and - conditions specific for Nordic environments. This project is new and a follow-up project is planned for 2026, in which a roadmap for the needed modelling development within the Nordic countries will be summarized.
