Modelling and Monitoring of Fallout Impacts after a Nuclear Explosion: Enhancing Nordic Preparedness

The two-day seminar will begin 09:00 UTC on August 19 and end at 16:30 UTC on August 20

We invite colleagues to propose presentations for the NKS REMSEM 2026 seminar on modelling and monitoring of fallout impacts after a nuclear explosion within a Nordic context. We are seeking suggested presentations that contribute to a structured discussion within a set of predefined thematic areas, see below.
The aim of the seminar is to bring together Nordic expertise to review the current state of the field, identify knowledge gaps and recommendations for research, explore opportunities for strengthened collaboration and specify the basis for a roadmap to strengthen Nordic preparedness in case of a nuclear explosion within the region.
The seminar will include expert presentations and breakout discussions.

Participants are invited to submit suggestions for presentations that address one of the thematic areas listed on page 2.
Abstracts (250 words) for the presentations will be requested at a later stage, once the final program has been confirmed.

Registration
Please register and submit your presentation suggestion, including title, brief description (2-3 sentences) and preferred topic, no later than May 1, 2026.
If you only plan to participate and not present, the deadline for registration to NKS REMSEM 2026 is June 1, 2026.

Thematic areas for presentations

Topic 1: Status and Current Activities
For example:
• Modelling approaches to nuclear explosions and radionuclide transfers
• Explored scenarios (Nordic context)
• Early phase challenges
• Monitoring and measurement capacity in the Nordic

Topic 2: Modelling Approaches and Development Needs
For example:
• Review/comparison of modelling tools for NE source terms, fallout and radioecology
• Fallout from nuclear explosions compared to fallout from nuclear power plants
• Scenario development (Nordic context)

Topic 3: Countermeasures and Food-Chain Impacts
For example:
• Prioritisation of food production systems
• Key radionuclides
• Practical constraints and mitigation strategies
• Waste management

Topic 4: Measurement Integration and Data Use
For example:
• Recent experimental findings
• Real time vs delayed measurement
• Novel approaches
