The seminar followed the first REMSEM seminar in 2025, which identified scientific and practical challenges related to modelling radionuclide transfer following nuclear explosions.
The 2026 seminar focused on strengthening the connection between scenario development, modelling, measurements, situational awareness and decision-making. Presentations addressed modelling approaches and development needs, food-chain impacts and countermeasures, measurement integration and data use, and urgent protective actions.
Breakout discussions focused on four themes: modelling under high uncertainty; integration of measurements and modelling; prioritisation and countermeasures; and Nordic preparedness and cooperation. Common challenges included uncertainties in modelling and source terms, limited measurement and analytical capacity, knowledge gaps concerning radionuclide behaviour and transfer to food and aquatic systems, and differences in national preparedness arrangements.
Several priorities for continued Nordic cooperation were identified, including model comparison and benchmarking, strengthened measurement capabilities and protocols, improved guidance for food and feed, competence development, and broader involvement of relevant authorities and organisations.
The seminar confirmed the value of continued REMSEM activities within the NKS framework. While practical exercises remain important for Nordic and national emergency preparedness, REMSEM provides a suitable Nordic forum for expert exchange, scientific discussion and development of common approaches.
