The proposed activity is an idependent follow-up of the two GammaSem seminars held inNorwayin 2009 and 2010, and the series of workshops held inDenmarkin 2011. The workshops inDenmarkwere well attended (50 participants from about 24 organisations), and the feedback from the participants was overwhelmingly positive. A summary report from the workshops is attached to this application. All relevant information from previous seminars and workshops have been made available at the GammaWiki web site (https://www.gr.is/wiki/GammaWiki). For copyright reasons material provided by lectures have been put on an "secure" web page that will be removed some time after the workshops (https://www.gr.is/nks-b/gamma-workshops).
There was a huge interest among the participants in future workshops for gamma spectrometry. We therefore propose to arrange a similar series of workshops in 2012 but with other topics than in 2011 and even more practical demonstrations and excercises for the participants. The topics will be chosen based on the feedback from the participants at the 2011 workshops. The main idea is that all topics should be linked to emergency preparedness, a topic of renewed importance brought into light after this year's event inJapan.
Already suggested topics include in-situ gamma spectrometry with a possible practical demonstration in field, practical work with real spectra from the nuclear industry (source term), tuning of libraries and special issues for NaI gamma spectrometry (especially for in-situ measurements and identification). A selection of spectra (in different formats) will be distributed to the participants before the workshops and separate sessions for working with these spectra will be included in the workshops. If possible, real spectra from theFukushimaaccident will be used for training.
The duration of GammaWorkshops 2012 will be 2-3 days, including individual workshops of 1/2-1 day each. The location of the workshop will be decided based upon available and suitable facilities during the relevant time period.
The GammaWiki web site has been used to gather references and make them available. Some of the references have been provided by lecturers at previous related events, lecturers which are leading experts in this field. All relevant information from future activities will continously be made available at the GammaWiki web site.
