Report Title:Conference on Radioactive Contamination in Urban Areas
Activity Acronym:URBAN
Authors:
Abstract:The Chernobyl accident demonstrated that major nuclear accidents can lead to contamination of vast areas, including cities and villages. However, the living/working environment has in the past not received the same attention in radioecology as has the agricultural, despite the fact that the majority of the population lives and works in cities. In recent years it has been established that dose contributions due to contamination in inhabited areas can be highly significant. If the specific problems related to contamination of inhabited areas are not treated optimally also the economical, social, and psychological repercussions of an accident may be severe. The aim of this conference was to create a forum for presentation of new knowledge on contamination and decontamination of inhabited areas. This will help to provide a basis for a much-needed improvement of preparedness strategies for inhabited areas in Europe, and at the same time help to pinpoint areas where further investigations are needed. A special session was devoted to the problems of contamination of forests, which often constitute recreational areas for urban populations.
