R-Program (NKS-R) is the Reactor safety including radioactive waste and decommissioning side of the Nordic Nuclear Safety Research (NKS). The objective of the NKS-R is to support Nordic work related to safety improvements, information exchange and networking, and education of new experts.
Research projects or seminars aspiring for NKS-R funding must apply for the grant from the NKS Board. The NKS-R Program Manager presents the applications to the NKS Board after an evaluation by an independent reference group. Projects looking for major NKS-R funding are suggested to participate in the Call for Proposals announced in August every year. The criteria emphasized at the selection of activities to be funded are the following:
NKS-R Program Manager Patrick Isaksson, Vattenfall Power Consultant, Box 527, SE-162 16 Stockholm, Sweden
The objectives and application processes of the NKS-R program is described in the NKS-R Framework
During 2007 NKS-R has granted 9 activities financial support and presently the following activities listed below are ongoing:

POOL |
|
Objectives |
The main goal of the activity is to increase the understanding of the phenomena in the condensation pool during steam injection. Their phenomena could be connected to bubble dynamics, pool swell, pressure oscillations, condensation rate and vibrations of the vent pipe. The main benefit of the project will be the use of the test results in developing and validating CFD codes for structural safety analysis. The connections of thermal hydraulics and structural loads will be studied in real conditions. |

RutheniumReleases |
|
Objectives |
The goal of the activity is to study ruthenium behaviour in an air ingress accident, especially during plant maintenance operations. The main objective is to study the effect of steam partial pressure on ruthenium release and speciation. Also the effect of seed particles on the transport of ruthenium will be studied in more detail. During this activity the catalytic effect of RuO2 on RuO4 decomposition, which has been claimed to have taken place in previous studies will be assessed. |

ShutdownSequences |
|
Objectives |
The goal is to better understand requirements on the shutdown system and control rod function in different abnormal situations. Improved knowledge of the need for diversified functions of the shutdown system. Another objective is to simulate the development of 3D codes and the coupling between neutronics and thermal hydraulics |

|
Objectives |
The project objective is primarily to look back and map the evolvement of safety goals for PSA. It is also of interest to compare the risks that are associated with PSA safety goals with safety goals related to other man-made risks in society. |

|
Objectives |
The goal of this activity is to improve methodology for cost calculations for research facilities utilising semi empirical data for plants at different stages of decommissioning. It is important in this regard that differentiaon is made with regard to stage of planning, cf IAEA Safety Standards Series Safety Guide No WS-G-2.1 from 1999 and IAEA Technical Report Series 351 from 1998 |
