The impact of radionuclides released from hospitals to water sewage systems

Workshop in connection with the NKS-B LUCIA project at Statens Strålevern, Oslo.

The workshop will consider the tools available for radiological assessments of liquid radioactive discharges from hospitals as well as measurements performed in sewage systems. At the workshop

  • the results obtained through studies (experimental and modelling) conducted in association with the LUCIA project will be presented,

  • invited speakers will give presentations in related areas,

  • a demonstration of the prediction tool, based on the model LUCIA, will be given.

24 – 25 January 2008 NKS-B Seminar on Sampling and Measurement, Reykjavik, Iceland

Registration - Deadline 19 December

Sampling is an often neglected part of radioecological assessments, yet it is usually the main source of uncertainty. The seminar will focus on various aspects of sampling, both in traditional radioecology (terrestrial, aquatic) but also including new challenges in emergency response situations.  This can be related to the more general question, how well can we through our measurements assess the quantities and parameters we want to assess and are they the right parameters?

Invited speakers include (apart from Nordic specialists in radioecology):

  • Marian Scott (professor, University of Glasgow): Environmental sampling-statistical principles and practice
  • Gabriele Voigt (Head, IAEA laboratories, Seibersdorf): The ALMERA soil sampling intercomparison exercise
  • Brenda J Howard (Head of Site, CEH Lancaster): Recent work in the UK on Best Practice Techniques for Environmental Monitoring
  • Phil J Tattersall (Head, Operational Protection Department, HPA): The UK Health Protection Agency’s response to the polonium-210 incident in London 2006
  • Björgvin Sigurðsson (Reykjavik Metropolitan Police, Technical Division): Working and sampling on a possible crime scene

(titles are indicative, they might change)

DOKUMENTATION FOR SEMINARS

NKS-B status seminar 2007

28-29 August 2007, Statens strålevern, Oslo, Norway
The aim of this seminar is to provide a forum where not only results of ongoing and concluded work within NKS-B can be presented, but also suggestions for work that could be undertaken within the NKS-B programme. The programme manager of NKS-R will give a presentation of the programme and ongoing work there.
The timing of the seminar was chosen to be good with respect to preparing proposals for work to be supported in 2008 (see above).  The seminar is intended to be a forum where new proposals can be discussed and project groups formed.
It may be possible to refund travel expenses for participants giving presentations at the seminar; this needs however to be negotiated with the
Programme Manager beforehand.
Please indicate as soon as possible if you would be interested in participating in the seminar

YoungRad seminar
Seminar for students and young scientists
14-15 December 2006, Helsinki, Finland

The YoungRad seminar is an initiative of young Nordic students and scientists. The aim of the seminar is to create a dynamic contact forum for students and young scientists working in the fields of radiophysics, radiochemistry, radioecology, radiation protection and other related fields.
Funding for arranging the seminar has been granted by the NKS.

Topics of the seminar will be the participants’ recent work and studies within the relevant fields. The subject of the presentation can be your own work or the research activities at your institute –anything that you will consider an important issue in your field of activity. The programme will include both oral and poster presentations. The language of oral presentations can be any Scandinavian language as well as English. All written material should be in English.

NKS and the Nordic Perspective – Present Work and Future Plans

NKS Status Seminar

May 10-11,  2006, Otnäs, Finland.

On the seminar the results of the last four years of NKS work will be presented and discussed, and future plans outlined. Both the NKS-R program (reactor safety including decommissioning and radioactive waste) and NKS-B program (emergency preparedness and radioecology) ) are included. The seminar is open to anyone who wants to get an update on Nordic nuclear safety research, follow the evaluations of the achievements so far, and participate in developing future activities.

Among the participants will be NKS owners, other financiers, board members, end users, and persons directly involved in the various activities.

Young scientists in this field are especially encouraged to participate.

The seminar offers a creative forum for networking and dissemination of information as well as debate on the usefuleness of this form of Nordic cooperation; applicability of the results; and trends, needs and possibilities of future NKS work.

Language: Scandinavian (Danish, Norwegian, Swedish); possibly with some of the presentations and discussions in English.

Registration fee: DKK 900 (covers participation, two buffet lunches, conference dinner, and coffee/tea/refreshments). The seminar is sponsored by NKS.
