Activity Name

PIANOLIB: Phantom-based intercomparison among Nordic whole body counting facilities and the development of a Nordic phantom library website

NKS-B
Research Area

Measurement Strategy, Technology and Quality Assurance

Project Summary

The aim of the activity is to evaluate the quality of in-vivo measurements in the region by means of an inter-laboratory proficiency test (PT). Previously during 2010, the activity has also included the development of a web-based tool for exchange and loan of phantoms and calibration material in the region.

During 2010 twelve of a total of nineteen registered laboratories have received and measured the intercomparison phantom. The calibration phantom IRINA jointly owned by the Nordic countries together with its set of radioactive material has been circulated for the measurements.

The activity will improve the availability of calibration phantoms by encouraging the use of the phantom library website among in-vivo laboratories in the region. Regarding the phantom IRINA, the activity aims to facilitate the present calibration procedure by acquiring a new set of radioactive sources including a mix of key radionuclides instead of the different single-radionuclide sets that are used today.

The activity includes a regional workshop with the goals of presenting and discussing the results of the PT, share the experiences of the participants in the activity and strengthen the network of specialist in the area through the exchange of knowledge. The activity aims to produce a peer reviewed publication summarizing the PT results.
