Project Summary

A tight and continuous cooperation between decision support system developers, radiation protection authorities and food authorities are necessary to ensure that best possible tools are taken into use and that the authorities know what to do and to expect from each other in an emergency situation. The EU project Euranos aims to finalise the handbook "Countermeasures for the management of food production systems" in June 2009. The implementation of this handbook in each country represents an improvement in emergency preparedness with respect to food safety. However, for the handbook to become a good tool it has to be adapted to national conditions and adopted within the responsible authorities. The adaptation should be performed as a stakeholder process to ensure the best possible adaptation and to ensure ownership of the product. A Nordic cooperation will also contribute to harmonisation of the countermeasure strategies in food production.

The FOOD activity will gather each country's radiation protection authority, food authorities and developers of decision systems to a seminar. The aim of the seminar is to

1. Exchange information about the cooperation between food authorities and radiation protection authorities in each country. (What are the radiation protection authority in charge of and what are the food authorities in charge of?)

2. Discuss adaptation and implementation of the Euranos handbook "Countermeasures for the management of food production systems".

3. Establish a Nordic network for the food authorities and radiation protection authorities responsible for food safety with respect to radioactivity.
